7. No Bodies
Two months after the crash, a private expedition of Bolivian alpinists went out to search for some sign of what had happened. The expedition had been commissioned by Ray Valdes, an Eastern flight engineer who would have been on board if he hadn't swapped shifts. They found their way to the crash site, located a good deal of wreckage and loose, scattered luggage, but were unable to locate the plane's flight recorder. Even stranger, the expedition found no bodies at the crash site or in the surrounding area, only blood.
8. Missing Pieces
In October of that year, ten months after the crash, Greg Feith, an air safety investigator, led a team of U.S. investigators to conduct an on-site examination of the wreckage of Flight 980. The plane's wreckage had come to rest at approximately 20,098 feet above sea level. Feith's goal was to find and retrieve the flight data recorder or Black Box. But the snows and mountain terrain defeated him and he never found the device he was searching for or any sign that anyone had survived the crash…
